Всё началось далёком 1994 году, когда в знаменитом нью-йоркском ночном клубе «Paradise Garage», диск-жокеи развлекали публику музыкой, представляющей собой изящный коктейль из соулфул-диско и госпел-хауса. В это время британские музыканты переигрывали заокеанские мотивы на свой лад, развивая такое музыкальное направление как «Jungle» («джангл»). «Джангл» - это инструментальные версии музыкальных композиций, проигранные на высокой скорости, подкрепленные брейкбитом и разреженным басом. Инструментальные версии композиций также назывались dub-версиями. Это название произошло от «double side» - оборотной стороны виниловой пластинки, на которой и были записаны инструментальные версии треков, ремиксы и акапеллы. Эксперименты с dub-версиями привели к возникновению исконно английского стиля музыки, получившего своё имя от названия того самого нью-йоркского ночного клуба - Garage («гэридж»). Мрачный бас, сумасшедшая скорость, синтетические электронные звуки, органы, горны, «ганшоты» (звуки выстрелов) - вот это и был «гэридж». Отсутствие вокала в таких композициях давало простор для работы МС («эмси»), задачей которых было подбадривание танцующих выкриками. Это, в итоге, привело к возникновению другого музыкального направления под названием Grime («грайм») или же британский хип-хоп. «Грязное» звучание новой музыки («grime» в переводе с английского – грязь) и скоростная читка «эмси» - всё это отражало дух и настроение чопорного Лондона того времени. «Гэридж» и «грайм», будучи музыкой улиц, становились настоящим андеграундом. Потом были 2step («тустеп»), Breakstep («брейкстеп»), Dark-garage («дарк-гэридж»), Hardstep («хардстеп»). Нелегальные вечеринки, пиратские радиостанции и аудиокассеты несли новый звук в массы последующие 5 лет, а наркотики, легкие и не очень, делали его доступным для понимания слушателя.
Перенесемся в 1999 год и постараемся представить себе следующую картину... Суббота, десять часов вечера. Церковь Святого Мэтью в южной части Лондона. В этот раз музыкальным критикам явился Dubstep («дабстеп») – мутант, который унаследовал от гэриджа все основные элементы. Изменено было только одно – ставка больше не делалась на барабанную партию, она была сделана на бас. Предвестником нового движения стал трек Stone Cold, записанный дуэтом Groove Chronicles ещё в 1998 году. В нём, вырезанные из R’n’b – хитов того времени, фразы вроде: «you don't know», «what you do to me» и «desire», пробиваются сквозь ярость мрачнейшего баса. Постепенно избавляясь от слащавого вокала, придерживаясь более минималистичного звучания, музыканты всё глубже забирались в дебри густого баса. «Развитие тёмной стороны гэриджа было неизбежно. Многие музыкальные направления со временем трансформируются в свои более тяжёлые, тёмные и быстрые гибриды до тех пор, пока кто-то не захочет назвать это чем-то ещё», – говорил Zed Bias, один из первых дабстеп-продюсеров. Развитие чрезвычайно популярного дабстепа продолжалось. Zed Bias, Menta, Oris Jay, Wookie, Zinc и многие другие представляли гэридж более ориентированный на брейкбит. Сегодня их музыку называют «брейкстепом». Такие же проекты, как Horsepower Productions и Ghost (El-B и Jay Da Flex) представляли гэридж с внедрённым в него «вайбом» (музыкой Карибских островов). Такую музыку журналист Стив Гудмэн, а по совместительству диджей под псевдонимом Kode9, и ведущий одноимённой программы на знаменитом пиратском радио Rinse FM – обозначал в своих статьях и рецензиях для разных журналов «Даб-степом». Его миксы для собственного электронного журнала об электронной музыке Hyperdub.com так и назывались – «Dub Steppa». Как ни странно, эта музыкальная схема оказалась вполне жизнеспособной. В 2002 году в прессе даже покатилась волна информации о странном гэридже, который отлично слушается в машине, несмотря на то, что он безголосый. Громче всех о новой тенденции заявил сан-францисский журнал «Акселератор» (XLR8R), поместивший на свою обложку фотографию музыкантов Horsepower Productions и смачную подпись «DUBSTEP».
Так или иначе, окончательная модель дабстепа была сформирована к 2005 году и хиты вроде «Midnight Request Line» от Skream давали понять, что больше оставаться в андеграунде просто невозможно. Густой, вязкий как нефть, бас, хрустящие, перекатывающиеся барабаны, шум и потрескивание сэмплов, атмосфера кибернетического апокалипсиса - это то, что делает Dubstep музыкой.
10 января 2006 года двухчасовое шоу «Dubstep Warz» на BBC Radio произвело эффект разорвавшейся бомбы, явив миру с лёгкой руки ведущей Мэри Энн Хоббс таких корифеев дабстепа, как Mala, Skream, Kode9, Vex'd, Hatcha, Loefah и Distance. Тем временем, сама дабстеп-сцена выдала обойму полноценных альбомов, которых за 2006 год вышло больше, чем за все предыдущие пять лет.
Но, если 2006 год был периодом рассвета британского дабстепа, то, начиная с 2007 года, дабстеп вышел на мировой уровень, что привело к его большему разнообразию и потере английского звучания, и, в принципе, к медленному умиранию стиля.
